A young F.A. Mitchell-Hedges during one of his trips
The adventurer à la
Mitchell-Hedges can be found frequently in fiction: in
addition to Allan Quatermain, we also have Indiana Jones, Crocodile
Dundee, the Mummy trilogy, pirate Jack Sparrow and his
astonishing adventures in the Caribbean, not to
mention the figure of Scrooge McDuck, whose adventurous life is
second to none.
What is remarkable about the adventures of Mitchell-Hedges and his
daughter Anna is that they are true, documented events
experienced first-hand. F.A. and Anna were a
living legend.
The age of exploration is over now, or rather, there are no more
uncontaminated places to be discovered or treasures to unearth. But
what is not finished is possibility of putting into practice what
we learn from their example.
There are many ethical teachings that are still valuable for
today's new generations.
For example, respect for nature, for the different populations that
live around the world and their ancient traditions
and above
all, their intrepid lives remind us that anything is possible, if
we really want it enough.
F.A. often stated that setting objectives for oneself is extremely
important for the young: only when we know where we want to go can
we reach our intended destination.
These are the closing lines from his book, Danger my
ally:
This indeed is the basis of the only message that I can
fruitfully offer to the youth of my country and the world. When you
are young and strong and full of hope, sit down one day and think
about the world. Decide what you would like to do above all else -
and then go and do it. Follow your star to the bitter end no matter
what the hazards or the perils; no matter even if the star proves
to be a false guide and you die in the attempt. You will have lived
life to the full, you will have enjoyed yourself and even if you
leave behind no material treasure, you will leave riches in the
hearts of those who have drawn strength from your strength and who
will cherish your memory until their day is done.
